Topic Torch and Yontoo Layers

5th April 2013

On Friday morning the 5th April 2013 I was bemused to see that my PC was once again updating following one of those never ending 'windows updates'. However when I started using the internet, and went onto the Mark Website, to check that all was ok, I also got an additional search feature along the right hand edge of the screen. I was not so concerned at that stage, it appeared as though it might serve a useful function. The search type feature 'Topic Torch' was an addition within the browser window and not part of the web site.

Then: a pop up window opened and I was invited to take part in a survey on my use of the 'Westlancsmark' website. You will appreciate that, being the webmaster, I was a little surprised and very concerned by this request and closed and the Topic Torch side bar very quickly.

It you were to click on the 'T' symbol in Topic Torch you would be taken to a page as reproduced below:

Settings: Enable or Disable Topic Torch

In order to use Topic Torch you must first download and install Yontoo Layers. Once Yontoo Layers has been installed please come back to this page and enable our product.

Uninstalling

You may uninstall Yontoo and all affiliated features, including Topic Torch, at any time by following the procedures below

Windows - To uninstall from any of the supported browsers on Windows, go to the Windows Start Menu and then to Control Panel > Add/Remove (or Programs & Features in Vista/Windows 7) and click Remove next to Yontoo.

Mac - To uninstall from Safari, Firefox or Google Chrome on a Mac, go to Tools > Add-ons in the top menu. Select the Yontoo logo and click Uninstall.

Needless to say I uninstalled the programs and rebooted my system.

I do monitor use of the website by means of Google Analytics. I doing so I do not gather personal information, it is used simply to monitor the number of visits per day and the pages visited.

The survey that I was invited to take part in is in no way connected to West Lancashire Mark Province or the web site and is clearly a clever but in my case unwanted intrusion from the internet.

Removal is recommended.
